In Microsoft Teams (free) you can add SMS participants from Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Japan, Mexico, or the US to a new or existing group chat. SMS participants from other countries will receive an invite to join Microsoft Teams (free) and can then join the group.
Note: Support for Australia's SMS participants will end on September 1, 2024. Participants of existing chats who are inactive for 30 days will be removed from the chat. Learn more about chatting via SMS. Learn more about chatting via SMS.
Add SMS users to a new group

Tap the New Chat button.

Tap New group chat.

Take or add a photo, type a group chat name, then tap Next.

In the To: line, type the SMS user's phone number and Add contact name to the phone number.
Tip: The SMS user will appear in the chat with the name you assigned to them. The SMS user can change the name later using SMS commands.

Continue to add other members of the chat by phone, name or email address until you're done creating the group.

Send a chat message to finish creating your new group. Your invited SMS user will receive an SMS message from Microsoft that starts the group chat and contains links to join via the app or learn more about Microsoft Teams (free).
Add SMS users to an existing group

Tap the chat you'd like to add the SMS user to.

For mobile users, tap the group chat's name, then tap Add people .

Enter in your SMS user's phone number and their name, then write an invite message so they know it's from someone they know and add them by tapping Send.
Tip: The SMS user will appear in the chat with the name you assigned to them. The SMS user can change the name later using SMS commands.

Your invited SMS user will receive an SMS message from Microsoft that starts the group chat and contains links to join via the app or learn more about Microsoft Teams (free).
Add SMS users to a new group

Select the New Chat button.

In the To: line, type the SMS user's phone number and their name, which will be visible to the group, to add them to the group, along with other members of the chat by phone, name, or email address.
Tip: The SMS user will appear in the chat with the name you assigned to them. The SMS user can change the name later using SMS commands.

Send a chat message to finish creating your new group. Your invited SMS user will receive an SMS message from Microsoft that invites the user to download and install Microsoft Teams (free) to join the group.
Tip: Select Add group name to name your newly created group.
Add SMS users to an existing group

Select the chat you'd like to add the SMS user to.

Select View and add participants near the top right corner of the window and select Add people .

Enter in your SMS user's phone number, then write an invite message so they know it's from someone they know and add them by selecting Add.

Your invited SMS user will receive an SMS message from Microsoft that invites them to the group chat and contains a link to install the app.
