Keep track of chats with AI notes in Microsoft Teams

In Teams chats, AI-generated notes provide an up-to-date shared summary of important information organized by topic as the conversation happens, including key decisions, action items, and open questions to resolve. As the discussion continues, the AI-generated notes automatically update to reflect the chat’s current status in a brief and scannable format.

Notes: 

  • AI-generated notes in Teams are available as part of the public preview program and might undergo further changes before being released publicly. To get access to this and other upcoming features, switch to Teams public preview.

  • Only Microsoft 365 Copilot licensed users can add and view AI-generated notes in a Teams chat.

  • AI-generated notes are currently only available in English, with more language support coming soon.

View AI-generated notes in a chat

AI-generated notes will automatically be added to newly-created chats, so you can catch up on key topics for work that happens across time zones or while you're away. To turn on AI-generated notes for your existing chats:

  1. Select AI notes in Teams chatOpen AI notes at the top right of a Teams chat.

  2. Select the multiple toggle icon  Multiple toggle icon then turn on the toggle next to AI-generated notes. Alternatively, select Turn on from the right pane.

The AI notes icon will change to  AI-generated notes icon and a confirmation message that AI-generated notes were turned on will appear in the chat​. AI-generated notes will appear in the right pane of the chat, automatically providing an up-to-date recap of the chat that's visible to everyone. 

Note: AI notes are not available in meeting chats or external chats.

Copy all the AI notes by selecting Copy at the top right of the pane or select certain parts of the AI notes to copy and share in your chat. If you keep AI notes open on the right side of a chat, the notes will update automatically and highlight content that is new to you since you last viewed the notes.

To turn off AI-generated notes:

  1. Select AI notes sparkle iconOpen AI notes at the top right of a Teams chat.

  2. Select the multiple toggle icon  Multiple toggle icon then turn off the toggle next to AI-generated notes.

The AI notes icon will change to  AI notes in Teams chat and a confirmation message that AI-generated notes were turned off will appear in the chat​.

To view AI-generated notes for your existing chats:

  1. Tap  Generic Ellipsis buttonMore chat options at the top right of a Teams chat.

  2. Choose  AI-generated notes icon​​​​​​​AI notes from the options.

Copy all the AI notes by selecting Copy at the bottom right of the pane or select certain parts of the AI notes to copy and share in your chat. AI notes will update each time you open them and highlight content that is new to you since you last viewed the notes.

You can only turn off AI-generated notes from a chat you created on your mobile device. Before the chat begins, you can turn off AI-generated notes from the banner:

  1. Select Turn off at the top of a Teams chat in the message.AI notes turn off mobile

Once the first message in a mobile-created chat is sent, AI-generated notes cannot be turned off from your mobile device. Go to Teams on desktop/web and turn off AI-generated notes with the steps above.
