The new Photos app on Windows offers enhanced capabilities for managing and editing your photos.

New features in the Photos app

Memories

Relive your memories and create new ones via OneDrive.

Filmstrip

The new filmstrip lets you easily find all photos and videos in one window and jump to other photos without leaving the filmstrip.

Multi-view

Compare multiple photos and videos side by side in the same window with multi-view mode by selecting items from the filmstrip.

Enhanced navigation

Keep your photos organized in folders in the left-sided menu.

iCloud integration

On Windows 11, add your iCloud photos to see all your photos in one place in the Photos app.

Changes

After you update to the new Photos app, you'll notice some features are different compared to the Photos Legacy app.

  • Albums: The new Photos app groups your photos differently than the previous version, collecting them in folders (like your other Windows files) rather than albums. However, you can copy your albums from Photos Legacy and add them to the Folders section of the new version of Microsoft Photos. Learn more about migrating your photos.

  • Video Editor: For fast and simple editing, we've added Clipchamp to the Microsoft family. The Clipchamp video editor empowers anyone to tell stories worth sharing. You can download it from Microsoft Store or install it from within the Photos app by selecting Settings > Open ClipchampLearn what you can do with Clipchamp and see Clipchamp Support to find answers and get help.

  • Group Photos by Faces: The People tab and the ability to group photos and videos by similar faces (when turned on by you) is not available in the new Photos app. The new Photos app also doesn't include a search by tags feature or use search data for those tags from Photos Legacy. Learn more about group photos by faces.

  • Find all your OneDrive photos: If you've signed in to OneDrive, the Photos app will sync all the files in your OneDrive Pictures library. If you have additional photos in other folders of your OneDrive account, you'll need to manually add them to the Photos app.

Photos Legacy

If you'd rather continue using the previous photos experience, which includes Video Editor, you can download Photos Legacy.
