Fix problems with charging Surface Slim Pen
Applies To
Surface Devices SurfaceIf your Surface Slim Pen or Surface Slim Pen 2 is not charging, first start by looking at the LED light on the pen. The pen features an LED light that shows the battery and charging status. Here's what the various LED light indicators represent.
-
Amber (fading in and out): Low battery.
-
White (fading in and out): Docked and charging.
-
Amber and white (flashing): Charging accessory needs an update.
-
White (flashing): Pairing mode (press and hold the top button for 5 seconds).
-
White (solid): Successfully paired with your Surface.
If you have checked the LED light and if your pen isn't charging, here are some things to try.
Plug the Surface device in and turn it on
Ensure the Surface device is plugged into a power source and turned on. If the device is in hibernate mode, off, or has a low battery, it may not charge the pen.
Check the connections
Check connections and functionality of the charging accessory by reconnecting it.
If using a Surface Pro Keyboard to charge the pen:
-
Detach the Surface Pro Keyboard.
-
Select Start > Power > Shut down and wait for your Surface to shut down.
-
Now, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds. If you see the logo screen appear after a few seconds, continue to hold for the full 20 seconds until you see it again.
-
Reattach the Keyboard
-
Press the Caps and Fn buttons to ensure the keyboard is working and receiving power. If the keyboard is not receiving power, submit a service order for the Surface Pro Keyboard.
-
Then place the pen in the keyboard’s storage tray.
If using the Surface Slim Pen charger, then ensure all connection points are plugged in correctly. For more information, see Use the Surface Slim Pen charger
Check for updates
If your pen isn't charging in a Surface Pro Keyboard storage tray or with the Surface Slim Pen Charger, you might need to update its firmware.
You can quickly check the health of your Surface drivers and firmware using the Surface app.
-
Connect your charging accessory to your Surface.
-
Place your pen in the storage area.
-
In the Surface app, expand Help & support to check the update status.
-
If there are updates available, select the Check for updates button to open Windows Update and install the available updates. Restart if necessary.
-
Check the LED light on the Pen to ensure it is charging or check in the Surface app.
Note: If you don't have the Surface app installed, you can download the Surface app from the Microsoft Store. When it has downloaded, select Start, search for Surface, then select the app from the list of results.
Try another charger
If possible, try charging your Surface Slim Pen with another charger such as the Surface Slim Pen Charger.
-
If the pen does not charge there either, your pen should be replaced. Submit a service order for your pen.
-
If the pen charges, submit a service order for what you were originally trying to charge the pen with, such as a Surface Pro Keyboard.
