Insert footnotes and endnotes

Footnotes appear at the bottom of the page and endnotes come at the end of the document. A number or symbol on the footnote or endnote matches up with a reference mark in the document.

Word uses a number or symbol to associate the note with a reference point in the document
  1. Click or tap within your document content where you want to reference a footnote or endnote.

  2. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote

    On the References tab choose Insert Footnote
  3. Note the newly created footnote, at the bottom of the current page or endnote, at the end of the document.

  4. Enter what you want in the footnote or endnote. 

  5. To return to editing, double-click the reference mark at the beginning of the note in the document.
