ISSUE

Users might experience an issue in Word where footnote numbering changes from original values to the number 8. 

This issue is happening after updating to 17531.20120 on Windows, or 16.84 on Mac.

STATUS: FIXED

This problem has been fixed by a service change, which fully rolled out on May 29th, 2024.

WORKAROUND

The issue can occur when the following is true: 

  • Footnote numbering is in an enclosed character

  • Footnote numbering is set to “Restart each page"

  • Footnote location is set to “bottom of page"

To work around the issue, alternative footnote settings can be used.
