Applies ToMicrosoft Store

If you're looking for solutions to Windows Update problems, see Fix Windows Update issues.

You can pre-order some Microsoft Store items that aren’t yet available. To do so, you must have a payment option such as a credit card on file in your Microsoft account, or enough money in the account to cover the purchase.

If you are using money in your Microsoft account, we recommend you keep a credit card on file as a payment backup. If your account falls below the total cost of the pre-order, the payment backup will cover the difference up to 100%.

Click an option below for more info about how our pre-order processes work:

For digital downloads

If you use money in your Microsoft account, we'll charge you right away. If you use any other payment option, including payment backup, we may charge you up to 10 days before the release date.  For more info, see Buying digital games on Xbox One FAQ.

For items we ship to you

If you use money in your Microsoft account, we'll charge you right away. If you use any other payment option, including payment backup, we'll charge you when the item ships.

You can change how you pay for your pre-order or update your payment info (like your credit card expiration date) any time before the pre-order is billed.

  1. Sign in to account.microsoft.com/orders with your Microsoft account.

  2. In Order history, find the pre-order and select Change how you pay.

  3. Choose a different payment option, or add a new one.

You can also check the pre-order release date and status under Details

You can cancel any pre-order online.

  1. Sign in to your Order history with your Microsoft account and look for the pre-order.

  2. Select Cancel and follow the instructions on the screen.

To learn more about how to cancel an order or pre-order, see Cancel an order or pre-order from Microsoft Store.

If you cancel a pre-order after it's billed but before it's released, we'll process it as a refund. To find out about the status of your refund, see Get the status of your return and refund from Microsoft Store.

To learn more about how to request a refund, see Returning items you bought from Microsoft Store for exchange or refund.

If you get a notice that we tried to collect payment for your pre-order and it didn't work, follow the steps in the message you received, or as shown here.

  1. Sign in to account.microsoft.com/orders with your Microsoft account.

  2. In Order history, find the pre-order and select Change how you pay.

  3. Choose a different payment option or add a new one.

If you don’t have another way to pay, we’ll try to charge your current payment option two more times before the pre-order launches. If we still can't collect payment, your pre-order will be cancelled.

Update your PC to the latest version of Windows 10.

  • Check Order history to see if the order went through. If it did and you still can't find your item, contact Microsoft Store support.

Pre-order price guarantee

The advertised price for pre-order items may increase or decrease before the date the product is released to the public. However, you’ll only be charged the lowest price offered between the time you place your pre-order and the date the product is released to the public.

The pre-order price guarantee only applies to physical pre-order items and prices offered at Microsoft Store. It does not apply to digital items from Microsoft Store, or to items and prices advertised by other sellers, prices inclusive of taxes or shipping charges, or typographical errors.

For pre-order offers based on an estimated price instead of the official price, the pre-order price guarantee only applies to and will be based on the official price for the item when announced.
