If you are having an issue with your Surface Type Cover or Keyboard, here are some things to try.

  1. Check for updates: To automatically update, select Check for Windows updates.

  2. Detach your Type Cover or keyboard (Applies only to Surface Pro or Surface Go): Unplug your Surface and detach the Type Cover. Make sure there is no debris, damage, or anything that may inhibit a connection.

  3. Force your Surface to restart - Newer Surface models: If you have a Surface Pro 5 or later, Surface Book 2-3, or any model Surface Laptop, Surface Go, or Surface Studio:

    • Select Start > Power > Shut down and wait for your Surface to shut down.

    • Now, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds. If you see the logo screen appear after a few seconds, continue to hold for the full 20 seconds until you see it again.

Your browser does not support video. Install Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe Flash Player, or Internet Explorer 9.

For the other Surface models, please see Force a shutdown and restart your Surface - Microsoft Support.

  4. Reattach your Type Cover or keyboard (Applies only to Surface Pro or Surface Go): Re-attach the Type Cover, making sure all the magnets touch the bottom of your Surface. If the Type Cover isn't recognized, try detaching and reattaching it once more.
