Movies & TV offers a simple, intuitive interface for streaming content from the Microsoft Store. The app also supports HD video playback, efficient navigation, closed captioning, and customizable settings.

Start the Narrator app 

The Narrator app is a built-in screen reader that reads aloud text and elements on the screen. For more info about how to use Narrator in Windows, see Complete guide to Narrator

Press the Windows logo  key+Ctrl+Enter to start or stop Narrator. On many keyboards, the Windows logo  key is located on the bottom row of keys, to the left or right of the Alt key. 

Download and open the Movies & TV app

The Movies & TV app is available for free in the Microsoft Store. Follow these steps to download and open the app:

  1. Press the Windows logo  key and type “Microsoft Store.” Press Enter to open the app.

  2. Navigate using Tab until you hear "Search," then type "Movies & TV" into the Search field, and press Enter.

  3. When the search results are announced, press the Tab key until you hear "Movies & TV,” press Enter to go to the app page.

  4. Press Tab to select the Get button, then press Enter. Wait for the app to download and install.

  5. To open the Movies & TV app, press the Windows logo  key, type "Movies & TV," and then press Enter. To close the app, press Alt+F4.

Key regions and elements in the Movies & TV app 

The app contains the following main elements and regions: 

  • Explore: Where you can buy or rent the latest movies and TV shows from the Microsoft Store.

  • Purchased: Where you can find movies or TV shows you've bought or rented.

  • Search: Use the search box to find content in your collection or the Microsoft Store.

  • Sign in: Use this to sign in to your Microsoft account.

  • Get Movies & TV from the Microsoft Store: Use this to buy or rent more content in the Microsoft Store.

  • More options: Open playback settings and the feedback hub menu.

  • Trailers: The Trailers section lets you watch previews for upcoming and popular movies and TV shows.

  • Movies: The Movies section lets you browse, buy, and watch movies from your collection or the Microsoft Store.

  • TV: The TV section lets you browse, buy, and watch TV shows from your collection or the Microsoft Store.

Keyboard shortcuts

The following keyboard shortcuts are available in the app.

Find a movie or TV show and start playing it

To Find a movie or TV show from the Movies & TV app, follow these steps:

  1. Press the Tab key until you hear” Search button,” and then type the name of the movie or TV show you are interested in. Press Enter to display the search results.

    Note: Search results for videos you already own or have rented will be displayed first.

  2. Press the Tab key to select either the Movies or TV list, then, use the arrow keys to navigate through the search results. When you find the desired content, press Enter to select it.

  • For commercial movies that you own, use the Tab key to move to the Play button, and then press Enter or Spacebar to start playing.

  • For a TV series that you own, focus is on the Play button for the first episode in the series, or the first episode that you have not watched yet. If you'd like to view a different episode, use the Tab key to move to the Episodes list, and then use the Down arrow key to move to the episode you want. Then press the Tab key to get to the Play button, and press Enter.

  • For a movie or TV show that you have to buy or rent first, pressing Enter opens that title in the Microsoft Store. Follow the instructions to buy or rent it. When you complete the transaction, the Buy or Rent button will change to Play or Owned. Make sure that a button is selected, and press Enter to switch the focus back to the Movies & TV app. If necessary, use the Tab key to move to the Play button, and then press Enter.

Control video playback

When your video is playing, here is how to control playback.

  • To pause or play the video, press Spacebar.

  • To skip forward 30 seconds, starting at the Play or Pause button, press the Tab key to get to the Skip forward button, then press Enter.

  • To skip backward 30 seconds, starting at the Play or Pause button, press Shift+Tab to arrive at the Skip back button, then press Enter.

  • To change audio or closed caption options, starting at the Play or Pause button, press Shift+Tab to select Show menu for subtitles and audio, then press Enter. Use the arrow keys to select the option you want and then press Enter.

Closed captions

Closed captions let you read the words that are spoken in the audio part of a video or television show. When closed captioning is turned on, closed captions are usually displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Turn on closed captions

Follow these steps to turn on the closed captions:

  1. Once you start playing a video, press the Tab key to highlight the Pause button, then press Enter to pause the video.

  2. Press Tab or Shift+Tab until you hear “Show menu for subtitles and audio button,” press Enter, and then use the Up or Down arrow keys to select a language, and press Enter.

  3. Use the Tab key to highlight the Play button, then press Enter to resume the video with closed captions. ​​​​​​​Alternatively, press Spacebar to resume the video.

Customize closed captions

Follow these steps to customize the closed captions:

  1. Press the Windows logo  key+U to open the Accessibility settings. Then, use the Tab key to select Text size. Subsequently, use the Down arrow key to choose Captions and press Enter.

  2. Use the Tab key to select Caption style and press Enter to open the context menu and use the Up or Down arrow key to select required caption style and press Enter.

  3. To customize the closed captions, press the Tab key to select Edit button, then press Enter. You can customize the following settings:​​​​​​​

  • Caption color

  • Caption opacity

  • Caption font

  • Caption size

  • Caption effects

  • Background color and opacity

  • ​​​​​​​Window color and opacity

For Windows 10, follow these steps to customize the closed captions: 

  1. Press the Windows logo  key+U to open the Ease of Access settings. Then, use the Tab key to select Display. Subsequently, use the Down arrow key to choose Closed captions and press Enter.

  2. To customize the closed captions, press the Tab key to select the following settings:​​​​​​​

  • Caption color

  • Caption transparency

  • Caption style

  • Caption size

  • Caption effects

  • Caption background transparency

  • ​​​​​​​Window transparency
