Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID pairs to your Windows 11 device using the in-box USB cable. To pair your Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID, follow the steps below.

Requirements

Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID requires Windows 11, and a device that supports Bluetooth 4.0, Bluetooth LE, or Bluetooth Smart. Before pairing the keyboard, please make sure that Windows is updated to the latest version. For info on how to check for Windows Updates, see Windows Update FAQ.

Note: Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID installer isn't compatible with Windows ARM-based PCs, such as Surface Pro X. Get more info on Windows ARM-based PCs.

Connect your keyboard

  1. Make sure your Windows 11 device is connected to the internet.

  2. Connect the in-box USB cable to your Windows 11 device and your keyboard.

  3. Turn on your Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID by sliding the power switch to on.

  4. On your Windows 11 device, tap the notification message that appears in the bottom right corner of your screen. The keyboard driver will then install and automatically pair Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID to your Windows 11 device. If you miss the notification message, or can't select it, turn the keyboard off and on to restart the pairing process.

After your Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID is set up, you can use it with or without the USB cable connected to your Windows 11 device.

Charge your keyboard

Connect the in-box USB cable to your Windows 11 device and your keyboard. While charging, the white LED above the up arrow key will blink. When fully charged, the white LED will be solid on. When your batteries are low and need to be charged, a red LED will blink.

Set up the Fingerprint ID for Windows Hello

To set up your Fingerprint ID, Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID doesn't need to be connected to your Windows 11 device using the in-box USB cable. For info on setting up Windows Hello, see Learn about Windows Hello and set it up.

Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID pairs to your Windows 10 PC using the in-box USB cable. To pair your Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID, follow the steps below.

  • Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID requires Windows 10, and a PC that supports Bluetooth 4.0, Bluetooth LE, or Bluetooth Smart.   1. Connect the in-box USB cable to your Surface or Windows 10 device and your keyboard.

    Note: This is also how you charge Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID. You may need to charge the keyboard at first use. While charging, the white LED above the up arrow key will blink. When fully charged, the white LED will be solid on. When your batteries are low and need to be charged, a red LED will blink.

  2. Turn on your Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID by sliding the power switch to on.

  3. On your Surface or Windows 10 PC, tap the pop-out toast notification message that appears in the bottom right corner of your screen. The keyboard driver will then download/install and automatically pair Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID to your Surface or Windows 10 PC. If you miss the toast notification message, or are unable to tap on it, turn the keyboard off and on to restart the pairing process.

    Tip: To install the Fingerprint ID driver, your Surface or Windows 10 PC needs to be connected to Wi-Fi or ethernet before pairing. If you are unable to set up the keyboard while connected to the internet, you can manually install the Fingerprint ID driver here.

    After your Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID is set up, you can use it with or without the USB cable connected to your Surface or Windows 10 PC.

  4. Set up the Fingerprint ID for Windows Hello. To set up your Fingerprint ID, Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID doesn't need to be connected to your Surface or Windows 10 PC using the in-box USB cable. To set up Windows Hello, go here.
