How to split a video clip for free

It's easy to cut a video, audio, image and any other media asset into smaller sections in Clipchamp. Use the scissors icon to the top left of the editing timeline in your Clipchamp project or click the S key as a keyboard shortcut. See below for a detailed guide.

First, start editing a new video and add your video, image, or audio file to the media library. For help with  this,  check out the adding video help article.

Step 1. Select the video clip you want to split and position the seeker

On the timeline, click the video you'd like to split. Your video will be highlighted green when selected. Next, move the seeker to the location on the timeline you would like to split your video clip.

Note: Use the timecode above the timelines as a guide. For example, place your seeker at 01:30:00 for 1min 30 seconds.

Step 4. Preview and save your video

Before saving your new video, make sure to preview by clicking on the play button. When you’re ready to save, click on the export button and select a video resolution. We recommend saving all videos in 1080p video resolution. Paid subscribers can save in 4K video resolution.

What's the difference between splitting, trimming, and cropping a clip?

Splitting lets you cut an audio or video clip into two or more parts so you can edit, move or delete them.

Trimming allows you to drag the sides of a media asset inwards to shorten it or outwards to lengthen it. You can also trim a clip by splitting it and then deleting the remaining part as shown above. To learn how to trim a clip, see How to trim a video, audio, or image clip.

Cropping allows you to remove unwanted edges or black bars you see in the frame of a video to "zoom in" on it. See How to crop videos or images in Clipchamp.
