Copilot in Outlook makes inbox management easier with AI-powered assistance to help you write emails quickly, turn long email threads into short summaries, and even create a meeting invitation from within an email thread.

Important:  Copilot in Outlook only supports work or school accounts, and Microsoft accounts using outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com, and msn.com email addresses at this time. Any Microsoft account using an account from a third-party email provider, such as Gmail, Yahoo, or iCloud, can still use Outlook, but won’t have access to the Copilot features in Outlook.

Important:  Copilot is currently available in New Outlook for Windows only. If you're not able to use New Outlook, check with your IT administrator and see Enable or disable access to the new Outlook for Windows

Need to draft an email?

  1. In Outlook, select Home > New Mail > Mail.

  2. To start a new message, select the Copilot icon  Copilot Icon from the toolbar, and then select Draft with Copilot from the drop-down menu.  "Draft with Copilot" drop-down menu option in New Outlook

  3. In the Copilot box, type your prompt. For example, "Let the team know we decided to use clay shingles and to go ahead so we meet the deadline."

  4. To choose your desired length and tone, select Generate options Generate options icon. You can even make it a poem if you’re feeling creative!Some "Let the team know" text in compose message box with options for tone and length

  5. When you’re finished, select Generate. Copilot will draft a message for you.

  6. Review the output.  If it’s not quite what you want, choose Regenerate and Copilot will create a new version. Or, to completely start over, change your prompt and select Generate again.  Some "Hi everyone, after careful consideration" text from email draft.   7. When you're satisfied with the output, select Keep. Edit the draft as needed, and then select Send when you're ready.

Want to summarize an email?

Use email summaries to get through long email threads and catch up on the conversation quickly.

  1. In Outlook, choose the conversation that you want.

  2. Select the Summary by Copilot box at the top of the email thread. Copilot will scan the thread to look for key points and create a summary for you.Click Summarize to get an email thread summary by Copilot.

When it's completed, the summary will appear at the top of the email and may also include numbered citations that, when selected, take you to the corresponding email in the thread.Summary of email thread with citations created by Copilot.

Want to send a meeting invitation?

You can use the Schedule with Copilot option in the toolbar to quickly create a meeting invitation from within an email.

Shows Outlook toolbar with "Schedule with Copilot" button highlighted.   Copilot helps you create the invitation—the meeting title and agenda are filled in for you, and the email thread is added as an attachment. The people on the email thread are included as meeting attendees, and you can quickly review the invitation, add or change things, then send it out. Note:  Copilot for Microsoft 365 in Outlook is only available in the latest version of Outlook for Mac. Legacy Outlook isn't supported. See Outlook for Mac.

Need to draft an email?

  1. In Outlook, select New Message.

  5. Review the output. If it’s not quite what you want, choose Regenerate draft and Copilot will create a new version.

  6. If you want to change the tone and length of the output, select Neutral to see a list of options—you can even turn your message into a poem if you're feeling creative! To change the length, select Short. Choose to keep, discard, regenerate, or change your tone and length options

  7. (Optional) To start completely over, change your prompt and select Generate again.

  8. When you're satisfied with the output, select Insert. Edit the draft as needed, and then select Send when you're ready.

Want to summarize an email?

  1. In Outlook, choose the conversation that you want.

  8. When you're satisfied with the output, select Keep. Edit the draft as needed, and then select Send when you're ready.

Want to summarize an email?

Keep in mind...

Copilot leverages GPT, a new AI system from OpenAI that creates text based on a prompt. As it is a new system, it may create things you didn’t expect. If you find content to be unexpected or offensive, send us feedback so we can make it better. Also, because the content is generated by AI that draws from the internet, it may contain inaccuracies or sensitive material. Be sure to review and verify the information that it generates. And note that similar requests may result in the same content being generated.
