Use a screen reader to work with the timeline view in Project
Applies ToProject for the web

This article is for people who use a screen reader program such as Windows Narrator, JAWS, or NVDA with Windows tools or features and  Microsoft 365 products. This article is part of the Accessibility help & learning content set where you can find more accessibility information on our apps. For general help, visit Microsoft Support.

Use Project for the web with your keyboard and screen reader to open the timeline view and create links between tasks, also known as dependencies. We have tested it with Narrator, but it might work with other screen readers as long as they follow common accessibility standards and techniques. You'll also learn how to remove dependencies.

Notes:

  • New Microsoft 365 features are released gradually to Microsoft 365 subscribers, so your app might not have these features yet. To learn how you can get new features faster, join the Office Insider program.

  • To learn more about screen readers, go to How screen readers work with Microsoft 365.

  • When you use Project for the web, we recommend that you use Edge as your web browser. Because Project for the web runs in your web browser, the keyboard shortcuts are different from those in the desktop program. For example, you’ll use Ctrl+F6 instead of F6 for jumping in and out of the commands. Also, common shortcuts like F1 (Help) and Ctrl+O (Open) apply to the web browser – not Project for the web.

Open the timeline view

  1. In Project for the web, open the project you want.

  2. Press Ctrl+F6 until you hear: "Project name and views."

  3. To open the timeline view, press I until you hear "Timeline, tab item," and then press Enter.

Add dependencies

Once you've created your project in the grid or board view, you can link together tasks in your schedule that must finish or start after or before one another. The linked tasks create so called dependencies and are connected in your timeline, which makes it easier to plan out dates for your project. Dependencies drive the project schedule — once you link the tasks, every change you make to the predecessor affects the successor, which affects the next one, and so on.

When you build a project using dependencies, Project for the web creates your start and finish dates automatically. For instructions on how to adjust the dates, refer to Manage tasks in the board view.

You can link both consecutive and nonconsecutive tasks.
