Why is my hardware unsupported?

When logging into Clipchamp in the browser, some users might see a version of this message:

"We've detected that your hardware is currently not supported by Clipchamp. For the best possible experience, try updating your operating system or internet browser to the latest versions."

If you see this, first ensure that you:

  • Are working on a desktop or laptop computer, not a tablet or smartphone

  • If working in the browser, are using Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome

  • Have updated Chrome or Edge to its latest version

  • Have updated your operating system

Enhanced web security in Edge

In addition, if you're accessing Clipchamp in Edge, check if Added security is enabled for Clipchamp.

If it is turned on, you'll see this or a lock icon in the address bar:

This feature is useful on some websites, however it can also overshoot its target in some cases and block legitimate web technologies that our editor needs to function correctly.

We recommend that you whitelist app.clipchamp.com in Edge if you're using Clipchamp for personal accounts

If you're using Clipchamp's work or school version, the web address will not be app.clipchamp.com and depends on your organization's or educational institution's SharePoint or OneDrive address, for instance https://contoso.sharepoint.com/. Check if Added security is enabled for it in your Edge. If so, we also recommend trying the following steps.

Click on Added security or the lock icon to the left of the browser address field and look for the Tracking prevention for this site line:

Then, turn off tracking prevention:

After that, reload the page and check if Clipchamp now functions as intended.

To see a list of whitelisted websites and manage them, go to edge://settings/privacy/trackingPreventionExceptions.

Check browser extensions

Some browser extensions can block elements on websites such as app.clipchamp.com that are required for the video editor to load correctly. If you have any Chrome or Edge extensions installed, check if disabling them or whitelisting the Clipchamp web address in them gets Clipchamp to load.

For Clipchamp's personal version, the address to whitelist is https://app.clipchamp.com/.

For Clipchamp for work or school accounts, the address to whitelist is your organization's SharePoint or OneDrive URL, for instance https://contoso.sharepoint.com/.

Check hardware requirements

If the above steps don't help, it is possible that your computer does not satisfy the hardware requirements to ensure Clipchamp works as expected. Your available memory/RAM should be at least 8 GB (16 GB or higher is better) and your machine should be a 64-bit computer running a 64-bit OS and the 64-bit version of Edge or Chrome. 

The graphics card is another important factor and should be a recent model. This is important because video editing is compute-intense, uses both the CPU and GPU, and can bring older devices to their limits.

You should also have enough free space on your computer's internal drive, which is required for temporary files and space during the video processing and exporting phase. The available free space should be more than the size of the video files you're using in your project.

If you're working with an older computer that doesn't meet these requirements, the editor may still function, but be aware that you could encounter problems like slow performance, freezing, and crashing, and would have a better experience on a different computer.

Try the Clipchamp desktop app for Windows

If you're on Windows, see if Clipchamp's app launches successfully on your computer as an alternative to accessing Clipchamp in the browser. On Windows 11, launch the app via the search field in the taskbar or find it in All Apps.

On Windows 10 and 11, you can also install it from the Microsoft Store.

If the app is already available on your device but hasn't been opened in some time, it's possible that you'll have to update the app to the latest version before it starts.

Brave-browser

For anyone accessing Clipchamp in the Brave browser (which should work because it's also Chromium-based like Chrome and Edge), you might see an error notification about "unsupported hardware or outdated Chrome version" due to the anti-fingerprinting feature in the Brave Shields.

In this case you can try the following:

  • Click the lion icon to the right of the address bar.

  • Temporarily allow fingerprinting in Clipchamp.

Additional troubleshooting

If the problem persists, it might be because your browser automatically disables some graphics card drivers that could make it unstable. For example, Chrome does not allow some integrated Intel HD graphics to initialize WebGL, which is a requirement in order to use Clipchamp.

To solve this, you can try enabling the #ignore-gpu-blocklist flag in Chrome, which will allow all graphics (GPU) drivers to be used. 

Warning: Be aware that, depending on the driver issues, changing this setting might lead Chrome to crash or behave strangely. 

To try this option, go to chrome://flags/#ignore-gpu-blocklist in a new tab, and next to Override software rendering list choose Enabled, then relaunch Chrome:

This will disable the blocklist and possibly allow access to Clipchamp. If you notice issues after enabling the flag, you can disable it again.
