Where do property values come from?

In order to identify the source of any property in the Microsoft 365 User Profile Data, refer to the sources property in each section (for example, Names, or Positions). The sources property contains at least one block with an id field. The id field is a GUID, and the Id to source mapping table in profileSourceAnnotation resource type shows the mapping between the GUID value and the source system.

If there are multiple sources for a single section, the isDefaultSource flag is set to true for a source to indicate it is the default source providing data for all properties not explicitly listed under other sources. For non-default sources, they will have the properties collection to indicate which specific properties have data from that source.

The Microsoft 365 User Profile combines data from multiple source systems dynamically and based on what data are available in each source. Therefore, the source of any given property can be different between different users’ profiles and could even change for the same user’s profile over time.

Understanding the source of a property can be useful if and when you request to update your  Microsoft 365 User Profile Data.
