Convert text to an Organization data type
Not only can you get data on subjects like cities, foods, stocks, geography, and more, but you can also get data types provided by your organization through Power BI. You can view data type cards to get specific info about your converted data and extract that to your workbook. Refresh to keep your data up to date and see Power BI data without ever leaving Excel.
Notes: In order to access and use data types from Power BI, you must meet the below requirements. If you do but still don't see the feature, please contact your IT admin for help.
-
You're an Excel subscriber in organizations with Microsoft 365 and the Power BI Pro service plan.
-
You have the latest version of the Excel app on either Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel. For more information, see Overview of update channels for Microsoft 365 Apps. Support for Excel for the web and Excel for Windows on the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel will be coming soon.
-
The English editing language is added to your Office Language Preferences.
-
Power BI featured tables are enabled in Power BI for data types in Excel, and you have access to them. For more info, see Power BI considerations and limitations.
-
Your Power BI admin has enabled featured tables in your organization.
Try it!
-
In an Excel workbook, enter specific identifying text into separate cells. For example, in a single column, you might enter the names of employees of your organization.
-
Select the cells and go to Insert > Table to convert to a table. Check the box for My table has headers if you've added them.
-
Select the text to convert in the table. Go to Data and in the Data Types group, expand the dropdown and select a data type from your organization. If the Data Selector opens, see Use the Data Selector for help.
Tips: There are two places where you can specify a data type from your organization:
-
Data types gallery, under From your organization: You'll find up to ten data types available to you, prioritizing datasets marked as "certified" and "promoted" in Power BI.
-
Select More from your organization or the Organization button in the gallery (available in some versions of Excel): This opens the Data Selector pane and shows all data types available to you from Power BI.
