You can apply a preset style to a picture—including a border and shading, or you can apply a custom border of your own choosing. 

Add a custom border to a picture

  1. Choose the image that you want to add a customized border to.

  2. On the Picture Format tab, select  The Picture Border button. Picture Border.

  3. Choose a color.

  4. Under  The Picture Border button. Picture Border, you can also choose from the following options, as needed:

    • In the Weight list, choose a border width.

    • In the Dashes list, choose a line style.

Add a preset border style and effect to a picture

The Picture Styles gallery offers many preset styles that make it easy for you to add a border and effect with one click.

  1. Choose the image that you want to add a border to.

  2. On the Picture Format tab, in the Pictures Styles gallery, choose a style.

    Tip: Choose  Table styles More button More to expand the gallery and see all options at once.

Remove a border from a picture

The way you remove a picture border depends on whether it’s a picture style or a custom border.

  1. Choose the picture you want to remove a border from.

  2. Go to Picture Format and do one of the following:

    • If the border is an outline, in the Picture Border list, choose No Outline.

    • If the border is an effect and you know which effect it is, In the Picture Effects list, choose the effect that's applied, then choose No effect. For example, to remove a shadow effect, select Picture Effects > Shadow > No Shadow.

    • If a style is applied, you can reset the picture, but resetting also removes any other formatting you’ve applied. In the Adjust group, choose  The Reset Picture button. Reset.

Add a preset border style and effect to a picture

The Picture Styles gallery offers many preset styles that make it easy for you to add a special sort of border with one click.

  1. Choose the image that you want to add a border to.

  2. Under Picture Tools, select the Format tab, and in the Pictures Styles gallery, choose a style.

    Tips: 

    • At the right corner of the gallery, select the More arrow to expand the gallery and see additional styles:

Add a custom border to a picture

  1. Select the image that you want to add a customized border to.

  2. Under Picture Tools, select the Format tab, then select Picture Border.

  3. Choose a color.

  4. Choose any of the following, as needed:

    • In the Weight list, choose a border width.

    • In the Dashes list, choose a line style.

Remove a border from a picture

The way you remove a picture border depends on whether it’s a picture style or a custom border.

  1. Choose the picture you want to remove a border from.

  2. Under Picture Tools, select the Format tab, then do one of the following:

    • If the border is an outline, in the Picture Border list, choose No Outline.

    • If the border is an effect and you know which effect it is, In the Picture Effects list, choose the effect that's applied, then choose No effect. For example, to remove a shadow, select Picture Effects > Shadow > No Shadow.

    • If a style is applied, you can reset the picture, but be aware that resetting also removes any other formatting you've applied. In the Adjust group, choose Reset Picture:

Add or remove a picture border

  1. Select the picture to which you want to add, change, or remove a border.

  2. Select Picture Format, and then select the arrow next to Picture Border.

    Click the Picture Outline icon

  3. Do any of the following:

    To

    Do This

    Add or change the color of the border

    Either select the color you want, or mix your own color by selecting More Outline Colors.

    Add or change the thickness of the border

    Point to Weight, and then choose the line weight you want.

    Add or change the style of the border

    Point to Dashes, and then select the line style you want.

    Remove the border from the picture

    Click No Outline.
