Self-repair and the available replacement components are intended for out-of-warranty repair, and they require the knowledge and technical skills to complete complex electronic repairs. If you're technically experienced and have the right tools, Microsoft has a select range of replacement components and service guides that enable you to perform the repairs.

Here are some useful and helpful tips you can try before you decide whether to self-repair.

  • Use our Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and follow the on-screen instructions for the diagnosis and suggested guidance in the test results. This might solve some of your problems and help narrow down what issue needs to be fixed. For more information, see Fix common Surface problems using the Surface app and Surface Diagnostic Toolkit.

  • Use the Surface app:

    1. Select Start , search for surface, then select the app from the list of results.Open the Surface app

      Note: If you don't see the Surface app in the search results you might need to download the Surface app from Microsoft Store online

    2. From Help & support, select Get help. Type in the question or issue you need help with and then follow the recommended help or articles.

Purchase replacement components for your Surface device

Self-repair replacement components are intended for out-of-warranty repairs. Part availability may vary by country and is subject to change due to supply chain constraints, customer demand, and related issues.

The parts are available for purchase at Microsoft Online Store and iFixit. All replacement components for each repair are noted in the service guides for applicable Surface models. Review the service guide for your Surface model thoroughly so you can purchase the right replacement component for the repair intended. Reviewing the appropriate guide will prepare you and allow you to be comfortable performing those repairs.

If the answer is yes to the above questions, you can purchase from Microsoft Online Store and iFixit.

Repairing your device with a replacement component doesn’t affect Microsoft’s Limited warranty; however, any damage to the device resulting from a repair performed by someone other than Microsoft or an Authorized Service Provider won’t be covered under Microsoft’s Limited warranty.

Microsoft is unable to advise on which parts will fix the specific issue your device is experiencing. The decision is yours and should be based on information received from services guides, combined with any diagnostic results.

If you purchase a replacement component, you'll receive the part and relevant collateral components (such as screws if applicable). Tools needed for the repair are sold separately through iFixit: The Free Repair Manual.

Microsoft customer support doesn't provide help to complete a repair. If help is needed, you might purchase out-of-warranty repair services by taking it to an Authorized Service Provider who provides out-of-warranty services or you can start an out-of-warranty repair order with Microsoft.

Yes, the specific replacement component and region will determine its applicable warranty. You can find more information in Microsoft Online Store and iFixit.

  • If you're within the Microsoft Store Online return/exchange policy time limits, you may initiate a return/exchange yourself from your online order history by following the instructions in Returning items you bought from Microsoft for exchange or refund. Go to iFixit for information about returns and exchanges.

  • If you're outside the Microsoft Store Online policy time limit, but still within the individual Microsoft Limited warranty for your replacement component, you can contact us at Microsoft Support.

The replacement components available for Surface devices are listed above on this page. You can buy those replacement components for Surface devices released on or after April 9, 2024 for a minimum of 3 years after the end of the device’s production in the following countries or regions: United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Availability of replacement components varies by device, by country or region, and over time.
