You may need to change your name or other information, such as your email address, that is connected to your Microsoft 365 account. The name information used in Microsoft 365 products includes the first name, last name (surname) and initials and is intended to represent the name that you expect to see in Microsoft 365 products.
You won't be able to update your name yourself in Microsoft 365, but your admin can do that on your behalf in Entra ID. Suggestions for how to find your admin are provided below. Your organization may additionally support use of Human Resource (HR) tools that allow you to update your name yourself.
Your legal name (your name on formal identification documents) may be required by your organization for payroll and contracts and Microsoft recommend that this data is stored by admins in local systems that ensure that the data is private and used only for these purposes, as documented in this article.
Why can't you just give me the name of who to contact?
We'd like to give you the name or the email address of who to contact, but unfortunately Microsoft doesn't have this information. Below are some suggestions that may help you find out who your admin is.
How do I find out who my admin is?
When looking for your Microsoft 365 admin to change your name, reset your password, delete an account, or do other tasks, here's some pointers to who you should contact.
If you're at school, you can contact your technical support or helpdesk team. If you work at an organization, you can contact your internal help desk.
If you're still not sure who to contact, try asking the person who gave you your Microsoft 365 account and password.
Note: If you're an IT admin, see the following topic, Change a username or email address.
