This article is for people who use a screen reader program such as Windows Narrator, JAWS, or NVDA with Microsoft 365 products. Use Microsoft Forms with your keyboard and a screen reader to respond to questions in a form or quiz. We have tested it with Narrator in Microsoft Edge and JAWS and NVDA in Chrome, but it might work with other screen readers and web browsers as long as they follow common accessibility standards and techniques.

Notes: 

Respond to questions in a form or quiz

  1. Microsoft Forms forms and quizzes are shared with respondents in the form of a web link. To start responding, open the link.

  2. To browse the questions within the form or quiz, press the Tab key or Shift+Tab. For each question, you hear the number of the question, its title, and question type. For mandatory questions you also hear: "Required to answer." For questions that allow you to select only one answer option, you hear: "Single choice." For questions that allow you to select multiple answer options, you hear: "Multiple choice."

  3. When you're on the question you want to respond to, do one of the following depending on the question type:

    Note: With Narrator, switch off the scan mode with choice, rating, Likert, and Net Promoter Score questions.

    • In single choice questions, to navigate to and select the option you want, press the Down arrow key until you hear the option, followed by "Radio button." The option is selected. In multiple choice questions, to navigate to the option you want, press the Tab key or Shift+Tab until you hear the option, followed by "Checkbox, unchecked," and then press Spacebar to select. Repeat for each option you want to select.

    • For single and multiline text questions, type your answer in the text field.

    • For rating questions, press the Right or Left arrow key until you hear the rating you want.

    • For date questions, enter the date you want in the MM/DD/YYYY format.

    • For ranking questions, use the Tab key or Shift+Tab to navigate between the items in the ranking list. You hear the name of the item, followed by "Move option up, move option down," and the current ranking of the item. To move an item up in the ranking, press the Tab key until you hear "Move option up," and then press Enter. To move an item down in the ranking, press the Tab key until you hear "Move option down," and then press Enter.

    • For Likert scale questions, press the Tab key or Shift+Tab to browse the statements. For each statement, use the Right and Left arrow keys to navigate to the response you want. 

    • For file upload questions, press the Tab key until you hear "Upload a file," and then press Enter. The Windows Open dialog box opens. Navigate to the file you want to upload, and then press Enter.

    • For Net Promoter Score questions, use the Up and Down arrow keys to navigate to the value you want.

  4. To move to the next question, press the Tab key until you hear the question. Respond to the question as instructed above.

  5. When you are ready to submit your responses, press the Tab key until you hear "Submit," and then press Enter.

Respond to questions in a form or quiz

  1. Microsoft Forms forms and quizzes are shared with respondents in the form of a web link. To start responding, open the link in Safari.

  2. Press the Tab key or Shift+Tab to navigate inside the form or quiz. For each question, you hear the number of the question, its title, and the question type. For mandatory questions you also hear: "Required to answer." For questions that allow you to select only one answer option, you hear: "Single choice." For questions that allow you to select multiple answer options, you hear: "Multiple choice."

  3. When you're on the question you want to respond to, do one of the following depending on the question type:

    • In single and multiple choice questions, to navigate to the option you want, press Control+Option+Right or Left arrow key, and then press Control+Option+Spacebar to select.

    • For single and multiline text questions, type your answer in the text field.

    • For rating questions, press Control+Option+Right or Left arrow key until you hear the rating you want, and then press Control+Option+Spacebar to select.

    • For date questions, enter the date you want in the format MM/DD/YYYY.

    • For ranking questions, press Control+Option+Right or Left arrow key to navigate between the items in the ranking list. You hear the name of the item, followed by "Move option up, move option down," and the current ranking of the item. To move an item up in the ranking, press the Tab key once. The focus is on the Move option up button. Press Return. To move an item down in the ranking, press the Tab key twice. The focus is on the Move option down button. Press Return. 

    • For Likert scale questions, press Control+Option+Down or Up arrow key to browse the statements. For each statement, press Control+Option+Right or Left arrow key to navigate to the response you want, and then press Control+Option+Spacebar to select.

    • For file upload questions, press the Tab key until you hear "Upload a file," and then press Return. The macOS Choose files to upload dialog box opens. Navigate to the file you want to upload, and then press Return.

    • For Net Promoter Score questions, press the Right or Left arrow key until you hear the value you want.

  4. To move to the next question, press the Tab key until you hear the question. Respond to the question as instructed above.

  5. When you are ready to submit your responses, press the Tab key until you hear "Submit," and then press Return.

Respond to questions in a form or quiz

  2. Swipe left or right to navigate inside the form or quiz. For each question, you hear the number of the question and its title. For mandatory questions you also hear: "Required to answer."

  3. Swipe right to move the focus to the body of the question.

  4. Depending on the question type, do one of the following:

    • For single choice questions, you hear each option, followed by "Radio button." For multiple choice questions, you hear each option, followed by "Checkbox." Swipe right or left to browse the options, and then double-tap the screen to select the one you want.

    • For single line text and multiline text questions, double-tap the screen, and then use the on-screen keyboard to enter your answer. When you’re done, swipe left until you hear "Done," and then double-tap the screen to close the on-screen keyboard.

    • For rating questions, swipe right or left until you hear the rating you want, and then double-tap the screen to select.

    • For date questions, swipe right until you hear "Please input date," and then double-tap the screen. The date picker opens. Swipe right or left to find the date you want, and then double-tap the screen to select.

    • For ranking questions, swipe right or left to navigate between the items in the ranking list. To change the order of the items, double-tap the screen when you hear an item you want to move, swipe right until you hear either "Move option up" or "Move option down," and then double-tap the screen to move the item up or down by one item.

    • For Likert scale questions, you hear each statement, followed by the radio buttons for the answer options. Swipe right or left to find the answer you want, then double-tap the screen.

    • For Net Promoter Score questions, swipe right or left until you hear the value you want, and then double-tap the screen to select it.

  5. Swipe right to move to the next question, and then repeat steps 3 and 4.

  6. When you are ready to submit your responses, swipe right until you hear "Submit," and then double-tap the screen.

  2. Swipe left or right to navigate inside the form or quiz. For each question, you hear the number of the question and its title. For mandatory questions you also hear: "Required to answer."

  3. Swipe right to move the focus to the body of the question. You hear the question type.

  4. Depending on the question type, do one of the following:

    • For single choice questions, you hear each option, followed by "Radio button." For multiple choice questions, you hear each option, followed by "Checkbox." Swipe right or left to browse the options, and then double-tap the screen to select the one you want.

    • For single line text and multiline text questions, swipe right until you hear "Edit box," double-tap the screen, and then enter your answer in the text field with the on-screen keyboard. Swipe down-then-left to close the on-screen keyboard.

    • For rating questions, swipe right or left until you hear the rating you want, and then double-tap the screen to select.

    • For date questions, swipe right until you hear "Collapsed, please input date," and then double-tap the screen. The Date Picker opens. Swipe right or left to find the date you want, and double-tap the screen to select.

    • For ranking questions, swipe right or left to navigate between the items in the ranking list. To change the order of the items, double-tap the screen when you hear an item you want to move, swipe right until you hear either "Move option up" or "Move option down," and then double-tap the screen to move the item up or down by one item.

    • For Likert scale questions, you hear each statement, followed by the radio buttons for the answer options. Swipe right or left to find the answer you want, and then double-tap the screen.

    • For Net Promoter Score questions, swipe right or left until you hear the value you want, and then double-tap the screen to select.

  5. Swipe right to move to the next question, and then repeat steps 3 and 4.
