When you're in a Lync Meeting or call, you may have to mute or unmute your audio multiple times. You can do this either in the Lync Meeting window or on your phone if you call into the meeting.
Make sure to check your audio device before joining a Lync Meeting or call and adjust volume levels and audio quality as needed. See Set up and test Lync audio.

Mute or unmute audio in a Lync Meeting or call window
When you join a Lync Meeting, your audio is muted by default except when you're the meeting organizer.
The Phone/Mic button looks like when muted.
When you want to speak, click the Unmute button on the notification, or click the Phone/Mic button to unmute audio. The button changes to and you can speak.
To mute audio again, click the Phone/Mic button.
Note: You can also use the mic and speaker buttons on your laptop, keyboard or some USB headsets to mute or unmute your mic and speakers. Keep in mind that the meeting organizer sometimes mutes the audience. When this happens, you won't be able to unmute your mic.
Mute or unmute audio on your phone
If you've called into a Lync Meeting by phone, you can use the mute or unmute buttons on your phone to manage your audio. Or you can use the touch-tone commands, such as *6, which lets you switch between mute and unmute.
Press *1 on your phone to get a list and description of all available commands for your account.
Notes:
-
When you call into a Lync Meeting by phone, your audio is on by default. Mute your mic if you're not speaking.
-
Also note that calling in to the meeting by phone may not be available for your account if you use Lync with Microsoft 365.
Mute or unmute the audience in a Lync Meeting
If you're a presenter, you can mute or unmute meeting participants, individually or as a group, to eliminate background noise.
-
To mute individuals, point to the people button in the meeting. Then right-click a participant and click Mute. You can right-click their name again to unmute their audio, but for security reasons, that participant also will need to unmute on their side to open the line.
-
To mute the entire audience, point to the people button in the meeting. Then select the ACTIONS tab and click Mute Audience.
All meeting participants, including those on the phone, will be muted. To unmute, go back to the ACTIONS tab and click Unmute Audience, or right-click a participant's name and unmute that individual only.
