Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install and use the Microsoft 365 app even if I don’t have a Microsoft 365 subscription?

You need to sign in with a Microsoft account to view, create, and save files on your Android device. If you don't have a Microsoft account, you can sign-up for free to use the Microsoft 365 app. When you sign in with your personal Microsoft account, or your work or school account, you gain the ability to save files to your cloud locations (OneDrive, SharePoint, or your preferred third-party storage provider).

The Microsoft 365 app also supports premium features that are available with a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription. Without a subscription, you'll be prompted to purchase a subscription whenever you're trying to access a premium feature. For more information, see What you can do with a Microsoft 365 subscription.

Should I delete the individual Microsoft 365 apps? Or can I keep them?

The Microsoft 365 app for Android works independently of any individual Microsoft 365 apps that you may have installed on your phone already (such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint). You can either keep the individual Microsoft 365 apps on your phone, or delete them to reclaim storage space — the choice is yours!

For more information, see Delete or disable apps on Android and Reinstall and re-enable apps on Android.

We strongly recommend that you fully back up your device data before deleting any apps.

If another version of the Microsoft 365 app (previously Office app) was pre-installed on your Samsung Galaxy device, downloading the newer version will upgrade the older app.

Where can I save new files?

If you are signed into Microsoft 365 with a work or school account, your documents and files are saved in the Documents folder on OneDrive for Business.

If you are using a personal Microsoft account (such as an outlook.com email address), your files will be saved in the Documents folder on your personal OneDrive account (with the exception of Scan Text, which is saved to your device but can be shared).

When working with PDF files in the Microsoft 365 app for Android, you’ll be prompted to choose a location where you want to save.

If you are not signed in, your documents and files are automatically saved to your device.

Does the Microsoft 365 app work on Android tablets?

While the Microsoft 365 app for Android currently offers only limited support for Android tablets, it is fully optimized for tablet use when working with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. Full app functionality for Android tablets will be made available soon.

To share your feedback about Android tablet support with us, please follow the instructions at the end of this FAQ section.

How does text conversion from image captures work and what languages are supported?

The Microsoft 365 app for Android uses Microsoft Lens to scan and capture information in images, which can be converted to text through Optical Character Recognition (OCR). The effectiveness of OCR depends on the quality of the image you’re working with, as well as the complexity, legibility, and the amount of text shown in the picture.

After you convert text from an image, you can review it to make sure it was recognized properly. For more information about currently supported OCR languages, see Microsoft Lens for Android.

After converting text from image captures, will the images be saved?

No, captured images from which you’ve converted text will not be saved to the Gallery on your Android device.

If you choose to export image captures directly to Word, the images are appended to the document.
